About Bespoke Mahjong
What happens when three women—one from advertising, one from finance, and one a physical therapist—come together? You get Bespoke Mahjong.
The story began during the pandemic, when unexpected pauses created space for something new. Caren, Sheri, and Krista met on the pickleball court, each recovering from injuries earned from playing just a little too much. As the games slowed, something else grew—friendship.
During that time, Caren introduced them to mahjong—a game she had learned from her mother, affectionately known as the Mahjong Master, who learned it from her own mother before her. What began as a lesson quickly became a ritual: hours around the table, laughter shared, and a tradition passed down through generations. We were drawn to mahjong not only for its gameplay, but for its deep cultural roots and the way it brings people together across generations.
Mahjong is a game with deep roots in China, where it has been played for centuries as both a social tradition and a game of strategy. Over time, it has traveled across cultures and continents, continuing to bring people together. That enduring spirit of connection became the foundation for everything that followed.
One day, Caren played at a friend’s home on an automatic mahjong table—an innovation long embraced in many parts of China. From that moment on, she called it the “Magic Table.”
The experience was seamless—almost mesmerizing—reshaping the rhythm of the game. It sparked a thought: how could something so functional be expressed through a design perspective that felt at home in the spaces and lifestyles of the people gathered around it?
As we spent more time playing, we developed a deep appreciation for the tradition of mahjong and saw an opportunity to bring our design perspective to the experience while respecting the traeditions that make mahjong so special.
Curious and inspired, Caren ordered a table of her own.
When it arrived, she did what came naturally—she called Sheri to play and Krista to help assemble it. But they never played a single hand. Once the table was set up, they all saw the same opportunity: to bring a design-forward perspective to the experience—one that balances performance with beauty, and innovation with intention.
That moment became the beginning of Bespoke Mahjong.
With Caren’s background in design and start-ups, Sheri’s organizational discipline, and Krista’s expertise in mechanics and logistics, the trio set out to shape a contemporary design perspective on mahjong through thoughtful design. They began with automatic tables—exploring materials, form, and user experience—before expanding into a broader collection of accessories and essentials for today’s player. We design tables, tiles, and accessories that bring a fresh perspective while honoring the heritage of the game.
From the start, their approach has been deeply hands-on. Krista, in particular, became known for doing what others wouldn’t—taking tables apart, diagnosing issues, and ensuring every detail works as beautifully as it looks. That same care carries through to Bespoke Mahjong’s customer experience, where responsiveness and trust are just as important as design.
Today, Bespoke Mahjong is a celebration of color, craftsmanship, and joy. Every piece is created with intention—to complement the experience of play and to reflect the spaces and people it belongs to. From thoughtfully designed tables to elevated accessories and playful palettes, each detail is an invitation to gather.
At its heart, Mahjong, originating in China, has long been a game of connection—across generations and cultures - and that continues to inspire everything we create. We recognize that mahjong holds deep cultural significance, particularly within Chinese and Asian communities who have preserved and shared the game for generations. We approach our work with respect for that history and gratitude for the traditions that continue to inspire players around the world.
For Bespoke, sometimes a pause becomes a beginning. Sometimes taking something apart is the first step to building something new. And sometimes, a timeless game becomes part of your own story.
